Cleaning up: Communities are ready for ODF declaration, they just need a little help

A small bit of sanitation history was made in Nepal last October. Community members in Ename, a hilly VDC that’s an eight-hour drive away from district headquarters Gaighat, declared their VDC an Open Defecation Free (ODF) area. This achievement was historical on two counts. Ename became the first VDC to be declared ODF in the whole of Udayapur district, which has a population of a little over 400,000. And the speed with which the declaration was made—a mere 25 days—took everyone by surprise since it normally takes several months, if not years, to successfully mobilise all villagers, including children and women, to stop the widespread and deeply entrenched practice of open defecation.
